Imagine hanging a shelf without a drill, or nails. Cleaning a room with no cloths, broom or mop and bucket. Think about it, you wouldn't fix a car without tools. The same goes for your skin - you need a basic tool kit, some key accessories that will work (alongside your chosen products) to keep your skin looking and feeling its best.
Kit out your bathroom cabinet with these, your skin will thank you for it…
FOR FACE
1/ Cotton Wool
You need cotton wool pads or pleats for removing make-up and nail polish. Keep these stocked up. As for cotton buds, you can use these for all manner of beauty fixes: to clear-up wandering polish during application, targeting spots with product and tidying make-up mishaps.

2/Muslin Cloths
You should have a pile of these in your make-up cabinet, they make removing cleanser and face masks a doddle. Plus, they very gently exfoliate the skin while you're at it.
Aurelia Probiotic Skincare, £18, victoriahealth.com
3/ Cleansing Brush
Urban pollution can age skin 10% faster than if you live in the country. And face wipes won't cut it, using a cleansing brush (with your favourite face wash) to remove make-up and debris is the answer.

Clarisonic, £155, clarisonic.co.uk
4/ Brush Cleaner
Good skin won't happen if you're using dirty make-up brushes – these are a hot bed for germs. Give them a clean every week to keep your skin (and make-up bag) happy.
Boots, £8, boots.com
5/ Headband
There is no way you can properly cleanse your face, especially around the hairline and jawline if your hair keeps getting in the way. A headband is the answer, and it's less than a fiver.
The Body Shop, £4, thebodyshop.co.uk
6/ Sponge
Shot through with clay (for combination skin types) and charcoal (for those prone to spots) these sponges don't just clean skin they treat it too. Use with water alone to refresh skin first thing.

FOR BODY
1/ Body Brush
Body brushing, if done every day, can improve the appearance of skin and reduce the look of cellulite (it's not magic, it won't get rid of it completely). Get into the habit of body brushing before your morning shower, just for a minute or two.
Elemis, £18.40, debenhams.com
2/ Tanning Mitt
If you want orange palms and fake tan cuffs then forget the mitt, but who does? It's a must for fake tan fans, plus you can just chuck it in the washing machine between uses.
He-shi, £2.26 on sale, blowltd.com
3/ Exfoliating Mitt
Keep this in your shower, the texture of the mitt grabs at dead skin and rolls it off. Depending on how dry your skin is you may well see dead skin coming away (gross, but oh-so satisfying). By clearing the way, you should find your body products will absorb more efficiently (meaning you'll get better results).

1/ Pumice Stone
A good old pumice stone will keep heels from turning dry and hard; use weekly to prevent a build-up of dead skin.
Spongelle, £12, victoriahealth.com
2/ Manicure Kit
Everyone should have a manicure kit close at hand – this one has everything you need: nail scissors, clippers, tweezers, file and a tool to keep your cuticles in check.
